Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Plaza Heroes de Cavite. We take the Paseo Alfonso XII (promenade) to access the Museo Naval. After this visit, we continue along this promenade until we reach the ARQUA.
Cartagena, Mediterranean Port
In the 16th century Cartagena was declared the seat of the Royal Galleys of Spain, and two centuries later, in the 18th, Maritime Capital of the Mediterranean. These two events led to today's Cartagena boasting the most beautiful castles and forts, and an arsenal and wall for the defense of the most important military city in the Mediterranean. Shortly thereafter the exploitation of its mines triggered an economic boom making the city one of the richest in Spain, attested to by the mansions built as their owners' private residences.
Come and stroll through its streets, enjoy visiting the Museo Naval, displaying the Peral, the world's first torpedo submarine, as well as the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology (ARQUA), where one will find the treasure of the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes (Our Lady of Mercies) galleon, among others. Let yourself be guided as you're shown the military and modernist architecture that has given the city great fame on a tour that is bound to surprise you and on which you'll discover the city's richness and evolution through its port, where many cultures have disembarked, making it one of the oldest cities in the Mediterranean.
Tickets: Naval Museum (free) - ARQUA: ¤3/ person (working days) and free on Saturdays from 2 pm to 8 pm, and on Sundays from 10 am to 3 pm.
