Puerto de Mazarrón (Mazarrón)

Sunken across from the Playa de La Isla two Phoenician boats have been located, as the oldest found in the Mediterranean. From the boat named “Mazarrón I” only the keel, some ribs and strakes have been found. The second Phoenician boat, “Mazarrón II” is almost complete and is preserved in situ across from the Playa de La Isla. Its dimensions are 8.10 m in length and 2.25 m in width, and it still held its entire load, made up mostly of lead ingots. The anchor was also found, in the “shaft, stock and nail” type, and it is the oldest known example found in the Mediterranean to date. The Phoenician vessels on Playa de La Isla, from the 7th century B.C., give valuable information about the Phoenician naval construction techniques, of cargo and maritime commerce. The discovery of the first boat took place in 1988, and the archaeological excavations on both ships occurred between 1993 and 2000, performed by the National Center of Sub-aquatic Archaeological Research (CNIAS).

Aledo

It is named after pico (pillory) because the heads and body parts of those who were executed were stuck on these pillories. This construction is a sign of feudal oppression. During the Middle Ages prisoners were tortured till confession and then exposed to the public, tied up to the pillories so that people would throw stones and insults at them. On 26th May 1813 the Cortes of Cádiz ordered to destroy all the pillories to ensure the freedom of the inhabitants. Aledo's pillory was built in the 16th century, after 25th July 1592, when the village was granted independence from the Order of Santiago and got the right to have its own prison and pillory. Originally, Aledo's pillory was just a log firmly fixed to the ground. To provide it with greater stability, it was later covered with bricks, remaining unchanged until our days. Shackles are still kept and spikes where prisoners were tied up or had their members stuck on are still visible. Structure: it has a cylindrical structure covered by a layer of bricks which prevents it from wearing away.

Monuments

Ricote

In recent years the pilgrimage of San Blas has turned into one of the most crowded ones of the Region. Distant devotion to San Blas is combined especially with leisure and religious events. An excellent exhibition of folklore, gastronomy, and Murcian traditions which shows the cultural values of our regions.

Cehegín

These are cave paintings of Levantine art. Their peculiarity is that they were drawn in the interior cavities of three caves in the Peña Rubia mountain, to the southwest of Cehegín. They are specifically the Cueva de las Palomas, the Cueva de Las Conchas and the Cueva del Humo. They belong to the Eneolithic period, and all the figures were made in light red.
