Connection Between Greenways Totana - Caravaca de la Cruz
The connection between Totana and Caravaca de la Cruz is a hiking and cycling route of almost 84 kilometres that runs through four municipalities (Totana, Aledo, Lorca and Caravaca de la Cruz) and crosses urban areas, small
villages, and large areas of crops, forests and scrubland.
The route starts at Totana train station, at the end of the "Campo de Cartagena Greenway". The route passes through the sanctuary of La Santa, the village of Aledo, the Lorca highland districts of Las Terreras, Avilés and Coy, and then
passes through the hamlet of La Encarnación, until it reaches the tourist hostel at the old railway station in Caravaca de la Cruz, the end of the "Noroeste Greenway".
It runs along rural tracks and paths, on dirt or asphalted roads with little road trac to allow walkers and touring cyclists shared use. In some sections there are cycling detours. In any case, as it is not a "greenway" with exclusive
use, special caution should be taken when travelling this route on foot or by bicycle.
This itinerary will facilitate the pilgrimage to Caravaca de la Cruz from the coast, since from Cartagena and Mazarrón it is possible to reach Totana by greenways, and then continue to Caravaca along the route that is now signposted.
BROCHURE TOTANA-CARAVACA DE LA CRUZ CONNECTION
Totana - Aledo Section (12,7 km)
This section starts at the Totana Railway Station, arrival point of the "Campo de Cartagena Greenway", and crosses the urban center, to go out to the place of Los Huertos, with the typical recreational houses, surrounded
by orange trees, lemon trees, almond trees and flowers.
After crossing the water transfer canal, it reaches the rest area of the Yéchar road, and then begins a steep ascent on an asphalt road to the rest area of the Sierra de la Mina, where the route turns to enter a path. The variant for
bicycles continues on the asphalt until it joins the path again one kilometer further on.
Then it passes through the enclave of the Sanctuary of La Santa, and continues ascending by a dirt track to the Mirador de Virgen Blanca and skirts the hill by a path in the Umbría del Pocico, with great views towards Sierra Espuña. In this area there is a new 1.7 km bike path that descends to the asphalt road and, after passing under the Arco de Aledo, turns left onto the RM-503 road and then takes the Camino del Cementerio, where the pedestrian route meets, and descends gently to the village of Aledo.
Las Terreras - Coy section (14,5 km)
From Las Terreras, the route heads north, ascending along a track in a forest area, where the rest area of the Abadíes spot is located. The route then descends through a dry land and then follows an asphalted road to the town of Avilés, at the entrance to which, opposite the church, there is another rest area.
After crossing throught Avilés, the route continues among vines, olive and almond trees along the asphalted road to Vinateros, which you leave to go around Cabezo de Coy to the south and enter through the RM-C12 road in Coy, a
picturesque town that has a municipal hostel next to which the route passes.
Aledo - Las Terreras section (28,5 km)
We leave Aledo towards the small village of Las Canales, with a pottery tradition, and continue along the new pedestrian and cycle path on the northern side of the RM-C21 road to the rest area of Cañada Larga, with a wide
panoramic view of Aledo. From there, along a tarmac road between cultivated fields, you reach the Vereda de los Gatos rest area, now in a forest zone.
The route continues along tracks surrounded by pine woods until it descends to the Cordel de los Alhagüeces (a.k.a. camino de la cañada de Caravaca), which crosses the ZEPA Llano de las Cabras special protection area for
Birds. Continuing northwest along this track, we pass the Rambla del Gitano rest area, entering an extensive wooded area, which then gives way to a dry farming area.
On crossing the RM-C9 road, the Casas Nuevas rest area has been set up. The route, after skirting a livestock farm, leads to the Los Alhagüeces rest area and continues west to the village of Las Terreras.
Coy - Caravaca de la Cruz section (28,5 km)
On leaving Coy there are two options: the cycle route follows the RM-504 road for one kilometre on tarmac, while the pedestrian route avoids the tarmac road, taking a detour on dirt tracks. Both variants join after crossing the road,
continuing along a dirt track to the old Venta de las Revueltas and the Los Ventorrillos spot, where there is a rest area with wide views of the surrounding mountains.
Before reaching the Collado de las Revueltas and heading towards the village of La Encarnación, the path turns o to pass near the borough of La Almudema, in case you want to split this long stage. However, you can continue directly
to La Encarnación along the signposted cycle route.
After passing the hermitage of La Encarnación and fording the river Quípar, the route reaches the Tres Carrasquillas rest area, where it begins a steep descent to the Nueva Caravaca residential area. After crossing under the RM15
motorway, the route enters Caravaca de la Cruz and ends at the old station hostel, the starting point of the "Noroeste Greenway".
