The Franciscan convent of San Esteban, located outside the old part of the town of Cehegín, consists of a complex of buildings that includes: monastery, cloister, chapel and church, and dates from the late 16thcentury. It was declared Monumento Histórico-Artístico Nacional ("Historic-Artistic Monument of National Interest¿) in 1976 and it is considered a characteristic piece of the Murcian Baroque style. The convent is made of three naves with a high choir at its base. The pilasters of the naves are of Corinthian order and those of the transept are of composite order. In the 18thcentury the convent got extended through the building of the Neoclassical chapel of San Jose, situated on the left of the transept. This chapel has a Latin cross plan and its high altar shows a Baroque altarpiece. In the church, it is worth highlighting the camarín (a little chapel behind the High altar) where can be seen the statue of the Patron Saint of Cehegin, the Virgen de las Maravillas, a religious image from the 17th century made by the Napolitan artist Nicola Fumo. This piece of art makes stand out the amazing churrigueresque altarpiece that frames it. This octagonal-shaped Camarín is covered with carved wood in consonance with the Neoclassical style. The dome is crowned by an awesome rose window. It has been recently fully restored as a red-jasper façade was built where before there was a plaster one that was demolished in the 1940's. It has been declared a national monument.

Mula

Doing their duty of helping others, the franciscans came to Mula in 1576. They stayed in San Pedro hospital while they found a place to build their convent. The council donated them an area to build it but, some years later the works did not start and they got the permission to stay in the hospital so they built their convent here. In 1836 with Mendizábal Disentailment, the friars were expelled and the convent was sold. The building was used as private houses, theatre and also a prison.

Santa Ana (Jumilla)

Este convento del siglo XVI, se encuentra a 5 km del casco urbano siendo el ejemplo más representativo de la conjunción entre arquitectura conventual y naturaleza. Sus moradores son franciscanos descalzos. La Orden Franciscana, eligió este singular paisaje para edificar el convento a finales del siglo XVI, abriéndose al culto en el año 1.573. En sus dependencias, atesora un importante, antiguo y valioso legado cultural, histórico y artístico que los frailes han ido acumulando y conservando a través de los siglos. La fachada llama la atención por sus dos torres idénticas, construidas en ladrillo y alberga las imágenes del Cristo Amarrado a la Columna, que fue adquirido en el año 1.755 al imaginero murciano Francisco Salzillo; el Cristo de la Reja es otra de las figuras que descansa en esta iglesia, del siglo XVII siendo una imagen que infunde una gran admiración y respeto por parte de todos sus visitantes.

Con éste ya son tres los conventos que la congregación de las Agustinas tiene en Murcia. Fue Sor Mariana de San Simeón quien la fundó. La iglesia de este convento es del siglo XVIII, la trazó el Maestro Bolarín el Viejo y alberga una impresionante imagen de San Agustín que se dice que fue obra de Salzillo.

This tower dates from 1539 when Charles V ordered a tower to be built in Cope. There is evidence that the works were finished by July 3th, 1576 when it was delivered by the Councilman of Lorca (Alonso Garcia) to Guevara's neighbor, Hernando de Burgos, another mayor. The tower suffered several sieges which in turn left the city damaged and abandoned, the first of these sieges took place two years after its handing over. Four years later in 1578 the tower was destroyed by the Turks and was then rebuilt the following year. After several destructions and remodelings in 1702 a new repair commenced, this made possible the construction of a bigger garrison. In 1756 the tower modified its structure once more, its last known remodelling took place in 1801. In the 19th century as piracy disappeared the tower lost its purpose, which led to its abandonment and dismantling. Currently, the tower has been rebuilt according to its 18th century version, becoming a paradigm of the defensive buildings on the Murcian coast.
